Collections for Closure

Get this - apparently there is a Museum of Broken Relationships. Started in Croatia in 2006, this traveling museum exhibits items such as the expected "I Love You" teddy bear to the not-so-expected packet of demined soil. The project reminds me of Orhan Pamuk's The Museum of Innocence.

What, if any, souvenirs of lost love might you exhibit in such a museum?

  1. the name of this museum reminds me of a funny, related mcsweeney's piece: http://bit.ly/ruQLEn

but also, the project is similar to miranda july's work. she did this 5 or 6 year long interactive online art project called "learning to love you more" (http://bit.ly/15u0TU) she would post assignments on the website themed around relationships, love, intimacy and pushing the boundaries of expression, and readers would send in their completed tasks. it's really interesting- they made it into a book. the nyt did an article about july last month-- http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/17/magazine/the-make-believer.html?pagewanted=all

  2. oh, and this is a good question. i would probably exhibit the hand made birthday card my 8th grade boyfriend gave me. i was so embarrassed by his failed crafting ability that i ripped it up and put it in my locker! only my friends knew, but still.. if that's not lost love i don't know what is :)

  3. HAH! I can just imagine this handmade card, (mostly) taped back together, sitting in a little glass case in the exhibit.

Thanks for cluing me in about McSweeney's. Love the "post gender normative man picks up woman from a bar"!
